Who it is for

California psychology candidates sitting the law and ethics exam, including anyone who passed the national exam and assumed this one would be easier.

Why the CPLEE is different

This is the exam people underestimate. It is not the ethics section of the psychology licensing exam with a California badge on it.

It tests California law. Mandated reporting timelines, Tarasoff as it actually reads in this state, record retention, telehealth rules. Generic ethics material will not get you through it, which is why every question here is written against California statute rather than national codes.

Format

PDF plus editable Word and PowerPoint. US Letter and A4. Lifetime access, unlimited prints, no subscription and no expiry.

The California Psychology Laws and Ethics Examination is administered by the California Board of Psychology, which is not affiliated with ClinicalToolsCo and does not endorse this product. Every question is my own, written from publicly available statute and the published content outline.

There is also a seven minute video on how the exam is built and scored.

Common questions

How many questions are on the CPLEE?

100 multiple-choice questions, of which 75 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest items. You have 2.5 hours, and the exam is taken on a computer at a PSI test center.

What does the CPLEE cover?

Eight content areas on the Board's outline: informed consent, confidentiality and privilege (20%); assessment, evaluation and intervention (20%); professional competence (16%); psychotherapeutic relationships (13%); records (11%); teaching, training, supervision and research (9%); professional issues (6%); and administrative (5%).

When can I take the CPLEE?

After you pass the EPPP and have 3,000 hours of supervised experience verified, you submit the CPLEE request to the Board. If you do not pass, you can retest three months later.

What is the passing score?

There is no fixed published number. The passing point is set for each form of the exam by the Department of Consumer Affairs' examination office using a criterion-referenced method.
