The IC&RC ADC exam is 150 questions, and 500 is the score you need.
How many questions are on the ADC exam?
150 multiple choice questions. 125 are scored and 25 are pretest items IC&RC is trialing for future forms. The pretest items are unmarked and scattered through the exam, so you answer all 150 as though every one counts.
How long do you get for the ADC exam?
Three hours for 150 questions, which is 72 seconds an item. Most candidates finish with time to spare; the ones who do not are usually re-reading vignettes rather than working the question.
What is a passing score on the ADC exam?
IC&RC reports a scaled score from 200 to 800, and 500 passes. That figure is in the IC&RC General Candidate Guide updated April 1, 2025. Because the score is scaled to the difficulty of the form you took, no fixed count of correct answers guarantees a 500, and a practice percentage is a progress measure rather than a prediction.
What are the four ADC performance domains and how are they weighted?
Evidence-Based Treatment, Counseling, and Referral is the largest at 30 percent. Scientific Principles of Substance Use and Co-Occurring Disorders is 25 percent. Professional, Ethical, and Legal Responsibilities is 25 percent. Evidence-Based Screening and Assessment is 20 percent.
Those weights are from the ADC Candidate Guide effective November 2022, which is the outline in force.
Is the ADC the same as the AADC?
No. The AADC, Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor, is a separate IC&RC credential with its own exam, built on a different job analysis with different domain names and weights of roughly 23, 18, 28 and 31 percent. Prep material for one does not transfer cleanly to the other, and the two are sometimes confused in the marketing of study products.
Why do some ADC outlines show different percentages?
Because several state boards still host an older PDF, labeled as the ADC guide, that is really the 2013 job analysis report with weights of 23, 27, 28 and 22 percent. That document is out of date. The current weights are the 25, 20, 30 and 25 percent above, and IC&RC's own candidate guide is the place to confirm them.
Which credential does the ADC exam lead to?
That depends on your state or member board. IC&RC writes and scores the exam, but each member board sets its own education, experience and supervision requirements and decides which credential the exam supports. Ask your board rather than IC&RC about eligibility and what the credential will be called where you practice.
What should you study first for the ADC exam?
Treatment, Counseling, and Referral, because it is the largest domain at 30 percent and the one where the questions are most scenario based. Ethics and Scientific Principles are 25 percent each and together are half the exam, so a schedule that treats ethics as a weekend read is under weighting it by a wide margin.
Our Addiction Counselor Exam Prep bundle is built to the current IC&RC ADC outline, with practice questions weighted 25, 20, 30 and 25 percent across the four domains.
Score yourself by section
The free ADC mini exam is 40 questions across the four domains in the proportions the real exam uses, with a written rationale for every answer. Score it by domain rather than overall, then put your next study hours into the domain furthest behind its weight. No card and no code.
If you want the arithmetic for turning those weights into weeks, it is in how to turn your exam blueprint into a study plan.
