Three steps for ASWB Masters ethics: study ethics first, practice applying the code, ask your board about the order of the two exams

ASWB Masters Exam FAQ 2026: Questions, Scoring, Retakes

The ASWB Masters exam is 122 questions. Only 110 of them count.

How many questions are on the ASWB Masters exam?

The ASWB Masters exam has 122 questions, of which 110 are scored and 12 are unscored pretest items. The pretest items are unmarked and mixed through the exam, so there is no way to spot them and no benefit in trying.

How long is the ASWB Masters exam?

Four hours for all 122 questions. That is roughly two minutes per item, which is a comfortable pace by licensing exam standards, and the candidates who run short on time are usually the ones going back to change answers rather than the ones who did not know the material.

What changed on the ASWB Masters exam in 2026?

The new content outline took effect on August 3, 2026. Four content areas became three, values and ethics became the largest area, and the passing standard was reset rather than carried over. Prep material written before August 2026 describes the old structure.

What is the difference between the LMSW and LCSW exams?

The Masters exam is the one most states require for the LMSW, the masters level license. The Clinical exam is the one required for independent clinical licensure, usually the LCSW. Both are 122 questions with 110 scored, but the Clinical exam asks you to make independent clinical judgments where the Masters exam more often asks you to recognize the right framework or the right next step.

Can you take the ASWB Clinical exam instead of the Masters exam?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on your state board. Some jurisdictions require the Masters license as a prerequisite for clinical licensure, others allow candidates who meet their supervision requirements to take Clinical directly. ASWB administers both exams but does not decide which one you need, so this question goes to your board.

Is the ASWB Masters exam scored on a percentage?

No. Results are reported as a scaled score, not a percentage correct, and the scale accounts for how difficult your particular form was. This is why no fixed number of right answers guarantees a pass and why comparing raw practice percentages across different prep providers tells you very little.

What is a passing score on the ASWB Masters exam?

The pass point is a scaled score set by ASWB, and it was re-established through standard setting when the 2026 blueprint launched. Numbers quoted for the pre August 2026 exam no longer apply. Take the current figure from ASWB directly.

How many times can you take the ASWB Masters exam?

ASWB requires a waiting period between attempts, and your state board may separately limit total attempts. Check both, and check them before your first attempt rather than after, because a board level cap changes how you should approach the first attempt.

How much does the ASWB Masters exam cost?

ASWB lists an examination registration fee of US$230 for the Masters exam. Your state board charges its own application fee on top of that, paid separately, and the two together are what the process actually costs you.

What should you study first for the ASWB Masters exam?

Ethics, on the current blueprint, because it is now the largest of the three content areas and it is the one most candidates treat as something they either know or do not. Ethics items on this exam are not a test of your character. They test whether you can apply a specific code to a vignette written so that two options both look defensible.

Our Masters Social Work Licensing Exam Prep bundle is built to the 2026 blueprint, with practice questions in the same content proportions as the real exam.

Score yourself by section

There is no Masters specific mini exam, but the free ASWB Clinical mini exam is built on the same three content areas of the 2026 blueprint, so it is still a fair way to find out which area you are weakest in. The weights differ between the two exams, so read it as a diagnostic rather than a score. Every answer has a written rationale. No card and no code.
