The NCE is 200 questions. NBCC scores 160 of them.
How many questions are on the NCE?
The National Counselor Examination has 200 multiple choice questions. 160 are scored and 40 are unscored items that NBCC is field testing for future forms. The unscored items are not marked and they are spread through the exam, so you answer all 200 as though every one counts. Forty is a higher unscored share than most licensing exams carry, and it has one practical consequence: a stretch of questions that feel unlike anything you studied is not evidence that you are failing. Some of them are being tested on you.
How long do you get for the NCE?
Three hours and forty five minutes for all 200 questions. That works out to about 67 seconds an item if you use every second and never pause, which is faster than most candidates practice at and much faster than the pace of a question you are arguing with.
How is the NCE weighted?
Not by the eight CACREP areas your program was organized around. NBCC lists those eight areas in its content outline and attaches no percentages to them. What it does weight, and publishes, is six work behavior domains. Counseling Skills and Interventions is 30 percent, 48 scored questions. Areas of Clinical Focus is 29 percent, 47 questions. Professional Practice and Ethics is 12 percent, 19 questions. Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis is 12 percent, 19 questions. Treatment Planning is 9 percent, 14 questions. Core Counseling Attributes is 8 percent, 13 questions.
The first two domains are 95 of the 160 scored questions between them. Most candidates study by the eight CACREP areas and give those two domains about a quarter of their attention.
Does NBCC publish NCE percentages by CACREP area?
No. If a study plan tells you what percent of the NCE is career development or group work, that figure did not come from NBCC. The only published weights are the six work behavior domains above.
Is the NCE scored as a percentage?
No. NBCC does not publish a fixed passing score for the current NCE. The pass point is set through NBCC's standard setting process and equated across forms, so a harder form and an easier form require different numbers of correct answers. A percentage on a practice set tracks your own progress over time. It does not predict the result on the real form.
Is the NCE changing?
Yes. NBCC has published exam specifications for a new NCE effective July 1, 2027. The new form has 170 questions with three answer choices each rather than four, 140 scored and 30 field test items, the same 3 hours and 45 minutes with an optional 15 minute break, six renamed domains weighted 15, 18, 15, 20, 12 and 20 percent, and a published passing score of 360 on a 100 to 500 scale. If your test date is before July 2027, the current 200 question form and the six domains above are what you will be tested on. If it is after, the outline you should study from is the 2027 one.
How many times can you take the NCE?
NBCC sets a waiting period between attempts and your state board may separately limit the number of attempts or the window in which they must happen. Check both before you schedule a retake, because the board rule is usually the tighter one.
What should you study first for the NCE?
Counseling Skills and Interventions, because it is the largest domain and the one most candidates under study on the grounds that it feels like the part of the job they already do. Doing it and answering exam questions about it are different skills. Most wrong answers in this domain are correct techniques applied at the wrong stage of the counseling relationship.
Our National Counselor Exam Prep bundle is written from NBCC's published outline, with two full length 200 item mocks, a rationale for every item, and a four page guide to how the six work behavior domains map onto the CACREP material you already have.
